While the Fool was just about to manifest a new reality, the Magician goes ahead and does just that. Using all the tools of the minor arcana – wands, cups, swords and coins – he synthesizes whatever is around him into alchemical gold.
Or whatever it is he wants.
The Magician is a bit self-centered. This isn’t to say he’s arrogant, but this is a solitary energy – one that does things by itself, for itself. One that encourages whoever draws the card to acknowledge their own unique, creative abilities. Ya know, their personal “magic.”
Related to the planet Mercury, there’s a communication element here. Perhaps your magic involves writing, speaking, or even just schmoozing. Charisma is hinted at here – the Magician can cast a spell on others, for better or worse. He’s matured beyond the Fool (perhaps after a few falls) and has some intelligence to show for it. Put it to good use. You can create whatever you want and – if you choose – rally others to your cause. The world is your oyster.
Or your pot of gold.
Or your pot of oysters.
Whatever you want.

When you draw this card, one thing is certain: you have the power (and perhaps duty) to work magic in this world. If you happen to draw it in reversed, perhaps the best place to cast your spells is on yourself.
