Tarot Tuesday: The Lovers

Ah, love! Ain’t it grand? Too bad that’s not all this card stands for – not by a long shot. This card deals with every element of partnership, including business dealings, cooperation, and the ever-dreaded compromise. It speaks to the partner as a mirror of the self, the balancing act inherit to all one-on-one relationships, and the precarious beauty of synthesis.

But yeah – it’s also about love.

This is a wonderful card if you’re curious about a relationship, obviously. Like the couple depicted in decks, you’re naked and free of inhibitions: exposed and accepted. But if you’re asking about something else, there’s a plethora of ways this could play in. Perhaps someone else is influencing your thoughts? Perhaps you’re the one doing the influencing, sharing ideas and opinions and doing your best to communicate clearly (yes, the Lovers card relates to the sign of Gemini, thank you for asking). Hell, let’s not forget the angel that overlooks this whole scene – maybe you’re even seeking a spiritual union rather than a carnal one. Upright, this card is a big fat yes to any of these.

The Lovers Upright

▹Synthesis
▹Duality
▹Choice
▹Cooperation
▹A merging of your inner divinity with the Universe

The Lovers Reversed

▹Imbalanced inner male and female
▹Blending of spirits rather than bodies
▹Lack of discrimination
▹A challenging relationship

Upright or reversed, this is a highly psychological card, dealing with projection, mirroring and trying to see yourself through another’s eyes. The Lovers call us to integrate our own psyches, to balance our inner male and female energies – and even to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds.
