Tarot Tuesday: Justice

Oh man, am I excited to try to write about this card. I draw it (mostly reversed) in almost all of my readings these days. I can ask about my creativity, my love life, my future, my kids, even old relationships and situations long gone, and there it will be – upside down. It’s clearly a theme, is all I can say. Injustice is a theme in my life.

Or so it seems. I could be wrong.

I’m a Libra, after all, and Justice and Libra are two peas in a pod. This card deals with contracts, partnerships, marriage, exchange of goods and energy, ethics, and lawyers – just like anyone born from late September to late October. Look into it. We’re all lawyers. Kim Kardashian: lawyer. Snoop Dogg: lawyer. My wife, Kate Winslet: my personal lawyer. Vladimir Putin: a lawyer you don’t want to meet in court.

I’m won’t lie, I’m reading about this card as I write this. I’ve been so overwhelmed by it lately that I fear I no longer know what it stands for. It’s like when you write a word too many times – suddenly you’re not sure if it’s a word at all, if those squiggles are even letters. Or is that just me?

That can’t be just me. I’m not crazy. I’m a lawyer.

Either way, it says here in my book that Justice also has to do with writing, writers, and the voice of criticism. As a writer, that might have some bearing on me. It also has to do with being true to yourself, and as a lawyer, that might explain the reversals. Pros and cons and deep analysis fall under Justice’s domain. In a big way, this is a card of clarifying your values and communicating them precisely. This is where fairness and truth preside.

This is also where you get your comeuppance. Not in Wheel of Fortune style, by surprise or karma from past lives. Justice doesn’t deal in windfalls or punches. This is a measured, practical, predictable (if you’re honest) balancing of the scales. If you’ve been putting in work, you might expect to get paid. If you’ve been treating others like dirt, you might expect to receive the same. But know that Justice is a compassionate card, and isn’t into retribution. Vengeance is rarely just. Justice isn’t cancel culture. You won’t get skewered if you’ve been irresponsible – but do expect to be held appropriately accountable.

Sometimes Justice shows up when a decision must be made, to let us know that the repercussions are serious and it’s crucial to consider all parties and all points of view. Make sure you’re being authentic while, to the best of your ability, not hurting anyone else. Be sure you’re willing to accept the consequences of your actions. Be sure you’re aligned with your highest truth.

Justice Upright

▹Contracts
▹Decisions, deliberation, negotiation
▹Establishing equilibrium, fairness
▹Truth

Justice Reversed

▹Immorality, dishonesty
▹Denying accountability –or– excessive self-criticism and shame
▹Prejudice, bias, imbalance
▹Legal loss
▹The need to reassess personal or societal values
▹Writer’s block

The Justice card asks you to own your truth with discernment and compassion. Check your biases, take a measured approach, and balance those Libra scales.

And as for me, I just have writer’s block.
