Massage

A healing modality as old as humanity itself, massage needs no introduction – though some of the specific techniques offered at Rainrose Wellness might. While my education (at Ashland Institute of Massage, in southern Oregon) primarily revolved around Swedish and deep tissue work, I was also trained in myofascial release, Chinese meridian massage, abdominal massage, cupping, prenatal massage, and various therapies intended to help with nerve entrapment. While each massage calls for a different approach, and not every technique serves every client, I’ll briefly detail those most likely to come up:

Swedish

A classic, standardized massage technique involving five basic strokes: effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, and tapotement. Swedish is the foundation of any massage I offer, ensuring a deeply relaxing, enjoyable experience – even if the session has more theraputic goals.

Myofascial Release (MFR)

Gentle, sustained pressure aimed at loosening and stretching fascia – the web-like tissue interwoven with every part of the body, recently categorized as an active organ. This technique is a favorite of mine, and I often open sessions with it. While all massage has the potential to transform and shift mindsets (the body keeps the score, after all), I’ve found that MFR is especially useful in releasing old holding patterns and opening new pathways for physical and emotional healing.

Cupping

Far from a modern trend, cupping has a history dating back thousands of years on multiple continents. Much like MFR, the suction-like pull of cups loosens fascia, allowing stagnant toxins to move out of the system so healthy interstitial fluid can flow. Despite sometimes leaving marks, these are not bruises and the process itself is typically quite relaxing.

What to Expect

Please arrive clean, on time and prepared to fill out an intake form on your first appointment. I strive to remain mindful of your needs and respectful of modesty. I offer strictly professional massages, and aim to honor your physical and emotional comfort throughout. Speak up at any time if you would like a change of pressure, temperature, or positioning – this is a time for you! I only use massage products that are hypoallergenic and unscented, but do let me know if you have any issues with them. Those with cat allergies may wish to book elsewhere – though no cats are present in the studio.

Reiki

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word reiki comes from the Japanese 霊気, meaning “a mysterious atmosphere; a miraculous sign.” A combination of rei (“soul/spirit”) and ki (“vital energy”), it’s commonly referred to as “universal life-force energy,” a natural, soothing, healing power flowing around us at all times. Doing reiki simply means channeling this force through the hands with the intent to heal.

Multiple studies have shown the mental and physical benefits of reiki. It’s among the most well-researched forms of energy healing, and while science can’t tell you why it works, it’s increasingly forced to admit that it does.

My personal theory goes something like this: Much of our suffering is rooted in the belief that we are separate from nature and the divine. Yet imagine if we let ourselves reconnect? Life itself is robust and self-sustaining; it’s constantly making more of itself. Whether or not you believe there’s an intelligent force behind it, it’s undeniable: life loves life. If life’s generosity was easy to undermine, we simply wouldn’t be here. And the principles behind reiki align with exactly this. Reiki is not about effort. Reiki is about receiving, drifting willingly with the current of the universal river. It invites ease so your body and mind can do what they’re naturally inclined to do. Deep relaxation, full-bodied peace, and even a sense of divine nurturance are not uncommon during a session – nor is falling asleep. It all boils down to getting out of your own way so nature can work its magic.

At least that’s why I think reiki works. But you can judge for yourself. Book a session and give it a try!

What to Expect

I don’t often physically touch a client during a reiki session. Many practitioners do, but I feel most called to work “in the energy field.” Touch can happen, though, so do let me know if you have any issues with that. I want you to be as comfortable as possible! Likewise, I may burn candles or palo santo, or use essential oils, but will gladly refrain if it bothers you. Wear comfortable clothes, and be sure to drink plenty of water afterward.

These health services are intended to be supplemental. My hope is to allow your body and mind more ease in the healing process.
