Farewell, Everything

Farewell, Everything

In a world waking from a dark age, a young musician finds himself thousands of miles from home, covered in bruises, and falling in love.

And it’s only downhill from there.

Chronically clueless and incurably naïve, runaway street performer Osha Oloreben has known his share of hard knocks – but none like those he’s dealt in the city of Valena. Dragged into war and battered by disease, Osha unwittingly trades his life for a fever dream of half-truths and hidden realms. Helped and hindered by a cast of mystics, rebels, and ghosts, he struggles to reclaim his body, his identity, and reality itself – before it’s too late.

With humor and horror in equal measure, ‘Farewell, Everything’ delves into the dissolution of a transforming mind. Climate fallout, cultural amnesia, and the enduring legacy of past mistakes set a bleak yet whimsical stage on which healing and self-discovery take on mythic proportions. Stumbling through the stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance – our unlikely hero braves the surreal landscapes of love, loss, and death, from which no one emerges unchanged.

Published under the pseudonym Véva Perala, the creation of my first book was a soul-plumbing, shadow-mining experience stretching deep into my youth, my psyche, and my dreams. The plot alone is testament to the depths to which I sank in retrieving this tale, and I cannot understate the role it played in my healing journey. It’s my hope to somehow share what writing has taught me of self-discovery, transformation, and the arts – and it’s also my hope that those who read this book benefit from its strange medicine. Farewell, Everything is a story for misfits and outcasts, those grappling with illness, isolation, mortality, or despair. At heart, it’s an alchemical myth, attempting to transmute the pain of existence into meaning – or at least have a laugh at the absurdity of it.

“A gorgeous and literary expression of sorrow, suffering and self-discovery. Farewell, Everything is a highly resonant novel which I would recommend to fans of accomplished literature and surreal, philosophical works.”

“This novel is engrossing and has strong psychological underpinnings. The narrative is humorous and emotionally rich. I found myself pitying the protagonist, then laughing at him, then cheering for him.”

Unthreaded

Our narrator has been many things before: an ancient priestess, a medieval monk, a Brahmin bureaucrat. But it’s the short, peculiar life of Reuven B. that left a mark. A permanent misfit twice displaced by conflict, Reuven never failed to find creative solutions to his problems. In the no man’s land between chronic illness and optimism, peace and war, orthodox Judaism and the love of another man, Reuven mastered the art of synthesizing opposites and following his heart.

But he never truly mastered himself.

With a ghost for a guide, Unthreaded offers an offbeat tour of interbellum London and an uncommon view of two world wars – a haunting backdrop for a tale of loss, secrecy, and human fragility. Both brutal and sensitive, Reuven’s posthumous musings reveal the private trauma of political upheaval and the delirium of a soul turned against itself. Amid the scraps of a torn life, we find a past rarely seen, a darkness seldom faced, and a queer brand of mysticism that stitches the fabric of existence into something a little more comfortable.

Based though it is on what I can only call “past life memories,” Unthreaded makes no demands on the reader to believe in reincarnation. The story stands on its own as a nuanced study of repression and self-denial. By writing this book, I gave voice to a strangled cry that’s been begging for air nearly a century – one that belongs to far more people than myself alone. It’s the voice of a soul that lost their center, a victim of secrecy and disowned experience, and letting it speak allowed me to see and accepted parts of myself long buried. Simple honesty, even just with yourself, has far greater implications than we often recognize – and it’s my hope that Unthreaded reaches those who need an extra boost accepting their own truth – even if they don’t believe in past lives at all.

That said, if anyone ever wants to talk about reincarnation, sign me up! I’ll ramble on about it for lifetimes.
